Read This Book, That's an Order!

I don't have much time to read these days. Lots of quilts to get quilted, but this is one book I picked up and thoroughly enjoyed. I think you'll like it too! I Feel Bad About My Neck, by Nora Ephron is a fast, fun read. It is a collection of essays, short stories and thoughts about women getting older.

You know Nora Ephron! She brought you such films as When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail...among many others. She's a funny, thoughtful writer.

The first chapter is called "I Feel Bad About My Neck. " Funny thing, I never really noticed necks before. Now I do. I notice all my friends' necks, women at the store's necks, my mother's neck, my sisters' necks and my neck. Oh my, who drew those lines on my neck? When winter gets here I will start wearing some scarves and turtlenecks. Her book made me laugh about my neck too! Oh well, it's just life.

Another chapter I enjoyed is called "I Hate My Purse." I never really thought much about my purse, but after reading that chapter, I hate my purse too! Nora Ephron says that women's purses "are reflections of negligent housekeeping, hopeless disorganization, a chronic inability to throw anything away." Her list of permanent purse contents includes "loose Tic-Tacs, lipsticks with no covers, leaky ballpoint pens and crumpled tissues that might have been used but equally well might not have been--who can tell?" After reading that chapter I cleaned out my purse. I found the same contents she listed, so I've committed to being more organized and cleaning it out more often.

Thank you Nora Ephron. If we ever meet, we'll wear our turtlenecks together!

Thanks for the recommendation! So funny about the necks -- I never thought about necks either but about 6 months ago I was sitting in my book group and suddenly found myself looking at a neck. And then the next neck. All those necks! Surely mine didn't look that bad. I rushed home to examine my own. Yak! It did. Must come up with some inspired saying for wrinkled necks like the one that equates a happy life to laugh lines. ;-)

Hmm...interesting. I haven't carried a purse for years. Everything I feel I truly need fits into a small wallet for my pocket, even the keys. This keeps my hands and arms free. I am curious now about what that might mean.
