So why is First and Ten still a good thing? Well, do you notice the football player on the right of my blog? Let me explain what that means.
I have decided that I have been quite a selfish quilter. Up until now I just quilt and quilt. It's my business, Quilts With Love. I have been in business for eight years now. But do I ever give of my services? No. Why the recent change of heart?
I read about one of my pioneer ancestors who baked bread for her family every week. She would give away one loaf of every ten that she made. She did this for many years and she felt that by always doing this, God would help her and family...and He did.This is what Vivian Love is going to do. I will do one charity of every ten quilts I do, just like the pioneer ancestor with her bread. I'm going to keep track of this and really make it a new goal.
I call it my "First and Ten Game Plan." Of course in football, it refers to a situation where a team has a first down with ten yards to go to get another first down. For me it will mean I will do one charity quilt for every ten quilts I do for my business. My game plan "kicked off" on SuperBowl Sunday...last Sun. I did a charity quilt for the Flying Geese Quilters Guild philanthropy committee.
This past week I read a quote by Pres. Gordon B. Hinkley, 15th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This quote made me stop and think."Generally speaking, the most miserable people I know are those who are obsessed with themselves; the happiest people I know are those who lose themselves in the service of others. By and large, I have come to see that if we complain about life, it is because we are thinking only of ourselves."
Yes...first and ten is still a good thing!

One of my personal charities is the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative run by Ami Simms. All of the profits are used for Alzheimer's research.
She has both a show of big quilts that tours and auctions of small
9"x12" Priority quilts, sized like that so they fit into a USPS Priority envelope for mailing.

Quilts of Valor is a fabulous way to recognize the disabled men and women who come back from war. When Quilt Studio webring made quilts last year we had a few left that needed to be quilted. We are trying to get them done this year (about 5 or 6 lap-sized quilts). We could use your help!
I am also a quilter, and I donate baby quilts to my local hospital for the NICU. They need the quilts 36x36 to cover the premie babies isolettes and keep them in the dark- where they continue to develope and grow strong.
It is a heartwarming feeling when I hear from a family about how they love the quilt and how well the baby is doing.
