Oh, The Places She's Been!

The LA "field trip" adventure must take a back seat today. Why? Because Daughter #2 turns 21! Is it a National Holiday? Well it should be!

Now here's a story about Daughter #2 that I swear is true. You must trust me on this!

Daughter #2 worked on the movie "Spiderman 3." In one scene she was first placed sitting next to Tobey Maguire in a theater. In the movie it was to be Broadway theater and "MJ" was singing on stage. Movie magic: Kirsten Dunst's voice was dubbed in and the theater was an old one in Los Angeles. Well, Daughter #2 was too tall to be sitting next to Tobey Maguire and so they put her behind him. You can see her if you don't blink as the camera pans right. Then they cut to a shot of "Harry Osbourne" looking down at "Peter Parker." Who is James Franco really looking at? In order to make the shot look best, James Franco was actually using Daughter #2 as his 'focal point.' The angle was better. He's looking right at Daughter #2. They fell in love. Ok, it was only for a few seconds, but it was true love! ;-)

At an early age whenever Daughter #2 saw a camera, she was ready to pose.
"All right Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close up!"
How's this one? Even with a broken leg, she still managed to break out a smile!
Here's one with her Mom. Where's the camera?
In high school, you would find Daughter #2 on stage with Comedy Sportz or whatever production the theater department was putting on.
She has that "presence" on stage. I remember the first time I watched her perform. I got chills.
She is also an excellent writer. She wrote an awesome one-act play that won an award and was produced at The Theatre of Note in Los Angeles. She was only 16 at the time. I got to go with her back and forth to auditions, rehearsals, and performances. An awesome experience!
I am truly amazed at her talent. I'm her #1 Fan...can you tell? She's had so many adventures in her 21 years and as her mom, I've been lucky enough to be with her on many of those adventures!

Eating lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel!
Such a beautiful place. I highly recommend it on any visit to Los Angeles!
Desperate Housewives...(she's there in the driver's seat.)
Mrs. Harris (filmed at the Wilshire Ebelle theatre.)

Cold Case....
...just to name a few.

Probably our most memorable adventure was when we went to New York together a few years ago. Never a normal pose...

Here we are on top of the Empire State building...
In Time Square...(I call this picture her "Happy Place.")
Now Daughter #2 is on her biggest adventure, that of being a married woman! Here she is pictured with her Sweetheart.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAUGHTER #2,

LOVE, MOM

Return to My Los Angeles: Part 1

Last March I wrote a four-part series called "My Los Angeles." You can read about it here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. Yesterday I returned to Los Angeles to meet up with Daughter #2 for lunch. Can you tell where we went? "Forget it Jake, It's Chinatown." --Jack Nicholson, as Jake Gittes in Chinatown, 1974.
Yes, that's right. Los Angeles has a Chinatown district and that's where we went. We caught a bus (for only 25-cents!) called The Dash and went from the financial district (where Daughter #2 works) over to Chinatown.

As you can see my BabyBoy came too. It was lots of fun! Here is Daughter #2 (below) posing in front of one of the many pretty gardens we saw. Did you know Jackie Chan's "Rush Hour" was filmed there? I didn't. But that's what I learned from the side of this restaurant. (too bad there's a little graffiti on it!) I just loved the architecture. This is a bank pictured below. I felt like I was in a foreign country...but it was still "My Los Angeles!" There were plenty of places to shop. We saw lots of these little bamboo plants. I think they are for good luck. I should have picked up one! Maybe next time. Daughter #2 bought one to put on her desk at work.
What is Daughter #2 doing in this picture below? Besides trying to look goofy, she's actually throwing a penny into a pretty water fountain. She's aiming at the dish in front of the sign "Vacation."

You see, you can aim at the dish in the garden for "Vacation" or "Long Lif." I aimed for Long "L-I-F." What does that mean.??? Seriously, that's what it said. So here you see me aiming for that! Well, here's hoping all of you have a long "lif." Tomorrow I'll tell you where we actually ate lunch. And it wasn't chinese food! You'll see. Come back again tomorrow. And I have another lovely sampler quilt to show you too!

Things Aren't Always As They Appear

Can you believe this little boy is 18 today? Thanks to Pres. Nixon signing the 26th Ammendment in 1971, my BabyBoy will be able to vote now. Below is a future registered voter on his 1st birthday. Remember things aren't always as they appear...he's using the bow on his head as a "thinking cap" and he's thinking, "Thank you, Tricky Dick!"
"Look Mom I found a strange ocean creature!" Remember, things aren't always as they appear...it's just a sand crab. Three beautiful children. Daughter #1 is the tallest, Daughter #2 is next and then the BabyBoy is shortest. Well, today things aren't always as they appeared in this photo.

Today the BabyBoy is the tallest, Daughter #2 is still next and Daughter #1 is now the shortest. How'd that happen? Who is this scary guy below? The little lion on the left looks worried. Well, things aren't always as they appear and the scary guy on the right is just the BabyBoy. He's not scary at all! He's sweet and kind and very talented.

Wait a minute! What's this? Is the BabyBoy a 'tagger'??? He better not be! Remember things aren't always as they appear!
The BabyBoy has many talents, one of which is making stencils. He visited the Laguna College of Art & Design and they let him put some of his stencils on their 'graffiti wall.' Don't worry, it was all legal. Here's some stuff he did: Here's another one:
Here's some more below. He started making these with my leftover quilting template plastic. He painstakenly hand cuts each one. Here he is, in what he calls his "Birthday Suit." (He got that suit for his birthday last year.)
Here's another one of my favorites. This one took many hours.
Here is another one of the BabyBoy.

This is where it started. It was a photo he took of himself. And then he cuts the stencil from that. Amazing.
Is the BabyBoy a rastafarian? Remember things aren't always as they appear.
No, he's just an amazing, talented young man who loves life. (and his Mom!)
Here's some teacher dressed in a cap and gown goofing around for the camera. Wait a minute! Things aren't always as they appear. It's the BabyBoy on the day he gradated last Feb...on Valentine's Day! (once someone substituting at his school thought he was a teacher!)

Is the BabyBoy carrying a hand gun? Is there a perpetrator hiding in the bushes? Remember things aren't always as they appear.
He better call in his back up...his friend Jordan. His partner in crime?
What's really going on? These silly boys were bored and they got out their airsoft guns and were trying to get a big lizard in the bushes in front of our house. Don't worry, no animals were harmed in the taking of these pictures! The lizard got away! (Hope he's not hiding inside my house!)
And now the final picture...Is the BabyBoy quilting like his mother? Remember things aren't always as they appear. He wanted to make a backpack for his rock-climbing gear. He is amazing. He can do just about anything he puts his mind to. He's an amazing young man! I love him very much. After all, he is my favorite son! Happy Birthday BabyBoy!

They Say It's Your Birthday!

(Daughter #1 turns 2 today? Well according to the picture she is! ...Seems like it was just yesterday we were celebrating her 2nd Birthday! Today she is 24? My baby is 24? How did that happen?)
And now to recite The Beatles' Birthday Song...

"They say it's your birthday
It's my birthday too, yeah
(not really! But it will be in a couple of weeks!...here we are together as Daughter #1 enters the MTC)
They say it's your birthday
(Here's Daughter #1 on her 16th birthday...surrounded by the boys! Typical!)

We're gonna have a good time
(Here she is in the 'surfing years'...I don't think she's getting much surfing done in Utah these days!)

I'm glad it's your birthday
(Growing up, this is where you would always find Daughter #1...swimming, diving, or playing waterpolo in the pool!)

Happy birthday to you
(Daughter #1 loved her Grandma and misses her.)

Yes we're going to a party party

(Then Daughter #1 went away to college in Utah and learned all about 'country livin.' She loved it!)

Yes we're going to a party party
(Daughter #1 can have fun anywhere! Even the MTC.)
(having a good time...preparing to serve in Portland, Oregon.)

Yes we're going to a party party
(Daughter #1 loved 'country livin' so much, the Lord sent her to serve out in the country: Oregon. Pictured below, I know she is thinking, "Wow! So this is how berries grow! I thought they just magically appeared at the grocery store!")
I would like you to dance (Birthday)
(Daughter #1 can have a good time...even in a potato pit. Those are potatoes she's standing on. Ghost enthusiasts might think that's ectoplasm in there with her...I don't know what that is!)

Take a cha-cha-cha-chance (Birthday)
(Daughter #1 loved 'country-livin' so much, she married a Utah boy and moved there.)

I would like you to dance (Birthday)
(We miss her...she left The O.C. for 'country livin')

...I'm glad it's your birthday
(I love you and am so proud of you!
...and even though you love 'country livin' so much...don't forget us here in The O.C.)

Happy birthday to you!"
(I love you and miss you, Daughter #1! Happy 24th!)
